Evaluating Websites

How to Evaluate an Internet Site

Because information on the internet changes so quickly, and because it can be published by anyone, it is important to establish whether or not it is useful research information. In order to do so you should look very critically at websites when you are researching a topic, and you should always verifiy your information with at least 2 other sources.

To choose the best internet site possible, answer the following questions in order to determine for yourself that you are using the most accurate and authoritative information:

Authority

  • Who wrote it? Is there a credible author or organization responsible for the content?
  • Does the URL (web address) contain edu., org., or gov.?

Accuracy

  • Are the facts and information documented and well-researched?
  • Is there a bibliography or list of sources upon which these facts are based?
  • How does the information compare with print sources that are available on this topic?

Currency

  • Are the facts and information up-to-date? Has the information been revised recently?

Content

  • Is the coverage of the subject matter simple or in-depth?
  • Are links provided to other internet sites or to other sources which provide further information on this subject?
