APRIL NEWSLETTER (2010)

Message from the President of JPPS-Bialik

Arnold CohenBetween Passover, Yam Hashoah, Yom Ha’atzma’ut (Israeli Independence Day) and the March of the Living, JPPS-Bialik students have been participating over the past month in one way or another in these often life-changing Jewish seminal experiences that serve to underscore their Jewish identity, their connection to Israel and to remind them of their roots, their community and their place in our global society. By the time our students graduate, they will have been immersed in a wide spectrum of Jewish and Israeli traditions and events.

Encouraging travel to Israel at the very least, as an enhancement to the high school’s Judaic studies curriculum, is also part of our commitment to preserving the centrality of Israel in our Jewish studies and reinforcing our mission-specific Jewish content and languages, in spite of the ever-growing pressure put on this curriculum arising from ensuring compliance with the Quebec Ministry of Education expanding secular subject requirements. I am sure that many of us would look forward to the day when school-led summer trips to Israel are reinstated and I would appreciate your feedback on this issue.

At a recent Board meeting, our mission was reinvigorated with Bialik’s Director of Judaic Studies, Rabbi Daniel Rosenberg, presentation of a sweeping plan to re-vamp and modernize Bialik’s Judaic Studies program. His comprehensive presentation was not only enthusiastically received, but was also unanimously endorsed as it renewed our commitment to an experiential and pluralistic Judaic Studies program that will challenge and enrich our students. Bialik parents will read more about the changes that are afoot with regard to Bialik’s Judaic Studies program in a special letter being sent home shortly. These changes together with the pending appointment of a new principal for Bialik and changes in the board governance structure bode well for a transformational 2010-2011 year that meets the expressed needs of our parents and students to continue to move JPPS-Bialik forward from strength to strength.

Message from the President of Bialik

Michael EliesenArnold Cohen ‘82, President of JPPS-Bialik’s reference to a transformational 2010-2011 year will most certainly apply to Bialik. Beginning this fall, Bialik will see a new principal, a reinvigorated Judaic Studies program and a new program being designed for students who are in need of some customized support in order to achieve academically. This is in addition to a new governance structure including a parent council for all parents to participate. Alone, each of these changes would merit a mailing to all Bialik parents which is why you Bialik will receive shortly a package from us; together they warrant a face-to-face meeting which is planned for an evening in May. Please stay tuned. Every Bialik parent will want to attend as it will be an opportunity to meet in person Bialik’s new principal, to ask Bialik’s Director of Judaic Studies, Rabbi Daniel Rosenberg, any questions you may have regarding our new and improved Judaic Studies curriculum, including the NETA program. (You will be interested to learn too that our new principal is very familiar with the NETA program also in use by the Donna Klein Academy in Boca Raton where she is coming from.) You will also hear firsthand from Dr. Ioanna Constantinescu about the changes she is bringing to our academic support programs, having now experienced her first full – in fact, very full, year at Bialik.

At this meeting our new governance structure, including the parent council, will be outlined so that each and every parent will know how they can actively participate in their children’s school. So, the meeting will offer all of us parents the opportunity to have our questions directly answered, to voice our concerns and to contribute where we can. In fact, it will be the time to join a committee, where you not only can continue to have your voice heard but can contribute positively to the continuous improvement of our great school. I look forward to seeing everyone there!

Message from the Head of School

Laurence FhimaIt’s a girl! Shirel Rachel arrived on April 14th and all is well. Now she is slowly adjusting to a household full of boys! As I prepared for this momentous occasion, I was obsessed with completing my “to-do” list that was not unsubstantial. Thankfully, expectant mothers tend to have a lot of energy which resulted in, I am proud to say, a new principal for Bialik. The formal announcement will follow the Board meeting on April 26th, the date of publication of this newsletter. I am indebted to the Search Committee who interviewed many excellent candidates from across North America, each more eager than the next to come to Bialik. As it happens, I have been studying at the William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education Day School Leadership Training Institute in NYC with our new principal, and we will as a result spend again the month of July together. We are very excited as the new principal’s tenure at Bialik will coincide with Rabbi Daniel Rosenberg’s introduction of the NETA Hebrew program as part of the improvements being brought to Bialik’s Judaic Studies. It will also coincide with a revamping of Bialik’s academic support programs, thanks to Dr. Ioanna Constantinescu. While I may not always be found in my office over the next few months, thanks to new technology, I will be reachable by email at: laurence.f@jppsbialik.ca, if not through my Executive Assistant, Connie Ianiro at: 514-731-3673, ext. 233. I will however present at the Bialik parent meeting in May to introduce to you Bialik’s new principal.

Message from the Principal of Bialik

Andrew TragerI am pleased to report that Bialik did very well in recent national math competitions with students scoring impressive results. There will be much more on this great story in the next newsletter.

The guidance department arranged several very interesting programs over the last few weeks.  Secondary 2 students participated in a workshop entitled "Teen Truth and Lies".  In addition, health workshops were arranged through Ometz for Secondary 4 on the topics of decompressing from stress, influence of media and advertising, sexual health, and yoga.

Secondary 1 students were especially delighted with the opportunity to meet and listen to Montreal Alouettes player, John Bowman, (Defensive end) and Dr. Ron Clavier, who is the team's consultant. They spoke about peer pressure, goal setting, and decision making, and also encouraged students to pursue their education.

In sports, the Bantam Girls Touch and Flag Football teams are scheduled to play other GMAA schools. Tryouts are underway for boys tennis as well as boys and girls Track and Field.

Once the holiday of Passover ended, many of our Secondary 5 students, along with Bialik teacher Lainie Smajovits, left on the 2010 March of the Living.  This trip will expose them to painful reminders of our past as well as provide inspirational examples of what the human spirit can accomplish.  I would like to share with you an email we received from one of our students on the MOL, Kyle Rosen, who sent a message that was read at our school assembly on Yom Hashoah.

"In our first few days on the March of the Living, we have been introduced to the overwhelming reality of the Holocaust. While standing at the square where hundreds of thousands of Jews were rounded up and forced onto trains, we had a sense of the terror that our people had experienced. We go back to the addresses of horror to give back honour to those that were ruthlessly murdered simply because they were Jews. Zahor, to remember and to never forget, this is our obligation to the six million. Our generation, and the generation after that, and the one after that, has that responsibility as well. We feel honored to retrace the steps of European Jewry and its tragic past all the way to the modern state of Israel. We are commemorating not only the six million Jewish men women and children who lost their lives in the Shoah, but we are also commemorating the spirit of the Jewish people today. As you sit here listening to our message, we are marching on the same path as hundreds of thousands of Jews did before us, but this time, we are not marching for death, we are marching for life."

Their trip culminated with the celebration of Yom Ha'atzmaut in Israel, where joined in the country-wide festivities. At the same time, we were happy to welcome a group of six Israeli students from our twin school in Be’er Sheva, Makeif Zein.  They spent the week of April 14-21 here in Montreal where they were hosted by Bialik students and their families. They also participated in our Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha'atzmaut assemblies.

Message from the Director of the CPE

Director of JPPS Children's CentreNow that spring is officially here, the children are bursting with energy. We are spending more time outside for both gym classes and special activities, and are anxiously awaiting the installation of our new play area, scheduled for early May. This past month the children have learned a lot about spring, and looked at the science of how things grow and how the weather changes. Our halls are adorned with many bright flowers and butterflies to welcome the season. The Pre-ks are learning all about the body and how every part works, while expanding their vocabulary in both English and French. At the same time, the whole school celebrated Yom Ha’atzma’ot by singing and dancing, painting their faces with flags of Israel, and enjoying falafel and blue and white cupcakes.. One of the highlights of the month was a Pre-k trip to JPPS to share a beautiful Shabbat celebration. The children were made to feel very welcome, and together they sang and danced with their peers sharing Shabbat together. This week we celebrated Earth Day. We spent a lot of time outdoors picking up litter so that we can keep our school clean, and we used the opportunity to reinforce different ways to keep our world green. This coming week, we are off to the Jewish Public Library for stories and activities, and we are looking forward to the outing.

At present, our building is filled with a lot of busy children with very happy faces!

Message from JPPS Home and School

We hope that everyone had a wonderful Passover holiday! JPPS Home and School is back at work planning different activities for the remainder of the school year. In celebration of Yom Ha’atzmaut, we served the students falafel for lunch, and we also provided the refreshments for The Bertha & Nathan Gillman JPPS Music Festival. Moreover, we are funding two programs at the Segal Centre. All of our grade 3 students will be going there twice to partake in both a circus arts and a dance program. Also, all of the kindergarteners will go there two times to take part in a music program.  Planning is also underway for this year’s career day.  If you have a career or hobby that you would like to share with our students; please don’t hesitate to get involved and let us know. As always, we are interested to hear about any new ideas you may have, and are always welcoming new parents to join us.

JPPS-Bialik in the News

Here is a quick recap of the state of JPPS-Bialik in the media since the last newsletter was published:

Way back, on the 17th on March, The Suburban printed an advance article on the JPPS-Bialik Gala after interviewing the Gala co-chairs. That same March 17th edition also ran an article about the Boy’s GEN J Elementary Basketball Invitational tournament that was held at Bialik. The March 24th edition of the Suburban published a picture with Bialik students alongside other Jewish high school students at a Leadership, Education, Development, Action event at the Cummings Centre.

On March 25th, in the Jewish Tribune, yours truly published an article following a political talk (Ralph Peters) that I attended. The article will be reprinted in this newsletter for your enjoyment.  The March 25th CJN mentioned Bialik students twice, first, Danielle Shapiro for her work with Cummings Centre for Jewish Seniors Mitzvah Meal program, and second, due to the fact that JPPS-Bialik participated in a mathematical program organized by the Weizmann Institute.

On April 1st, JPPS was mentioned in an article written in the Montreal Gazette about the owner of Ernie & Ellie, and current JPPS parent, Roman Kreyzerman. He said that he sends his boys to JPPS because it provides them with “a foundation” of Jewish traditions. Also on April 1st, a photo and mini article of the exceptional JPPS Math team was published in the CJN, along with a photo of Bialik student, Noah Stock, and his family, for their work with the MADA food bank. The April 7th edition of the Suburban published a photo and a mini recap article about the JPPS-Bialik Concert Gala.
Last, but certainly not least, the April edition of the Jewish Standard Magazine also ran a story of the LEDA event at the Cummings Centre.

JPPS-Bialik Athletics

April has been an exciting month in Athletics, as we have begun our spring sports season for 2010. We have three girls’ football teams which number the most ever for Bialik. Two of the teams are comprised of Secondary I and Secondary II girls’ playing Touch and Flag football, while the Juvenile Girls team, made up of Secondary IV and V girls, will be playing Touch football against other schools from the Montreal area. As I write this, only the Bantam Girls Touch football team has seen any action thus far, and is currently winless, but the players are learning a lot about the game and are having plenty of fun. The Bantam flag football team and the juvenile touch football team will begin their season shortly.

The tennis and track & field squads have also concluded their tryouts, and those Bulldogs look to smash and volley their way into the winner’s circle when those sports begin in May.

The Intramural Soccer season is also about to begin their playoffs so stay tuned for the next newsletter as this will be a great mini-tournament to crown a champion.

The basketball season has also concluded for the JPPS “Pugs” and “Lady Pugs” and it was a phenomenal season. The Lady Pugs were able to win the League Championship against a very tough Akiva Devils squad. The Pugs on the other hand were handed a tough loss at the hands of the Akiva Devils in what was a real nail-biter. Both teams should be congratulated on a terrific season and now their focus turns to finishing their Elementary school year and they can now look forward to trying out for their high school squads.

Alumnus of the Month: Ilan Elbaz ‘00

Ilan Elbaz ‘00“Our attitudes follow our behaviours,” Ilan Elbaz, Bialik’s April Alumnus of the Month, explains to me as we discuss the psychology behind adopting an environmentally-conscious lifestyle. “Fortunately and unfortunately for us,” he adds, “old habits die hard and routines resist change.” A fellow graduate from the Class of 2000, Ilan is the founder and C.E.O. of The Green Solution, a management consulting company in the ever-expanding field of sustainable development. He is also a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP) for new construction and major renovations, licensed by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC).

Ilan’s job is to facilitate “bridging the gap between where an organization actually stands (environmentally speaking), and where they ought to be, so they can benefit from the myriad of economical, social, and of course environmental advantages that are associated with these best practices.” To building and business managers, as well as homeowners, Ilan’s commonsense approach has earned major clients such as the Jewish General Hospital and Teva Quebec acclaim on a national scale, and generated savings in the hundreds of thousands.
“We know when big companies throw around ‘green’ as just a ruse to cut corners to their customers, they wind up doing more harm than good. People get ‘jaded’.” Ilan remarks, “The Green Solution’s foundation is a marriage of science and common sense- science and common sense when considering the environmental, social and of course economical benefits of going ‘green’. That way you can be proud and transparent about your practices!”

Just how did Ilan find the inspiration to invent himself as a proverbial green machine? In California, of course! After graduating McGill University with a B.Sc. in Psychology and a minor in Management, Ilan decided to head out west and take some time off before his next move in life. It was in that bastion of progressivism and former “hippie-ism” where Ilan discovered that healthy environmental practices were simply the norm. Recycling, composting, and conserving energy weren’t just fads or marketing tools. According to Ilan, people merely “integrated these activities into their daily life. This was the common sense there. Why weren’t we like that here?” Ilan had seen enough; he headed back East and The Green Solution was born.
The one-time French valedictorian of the Class of 2000 has some sage advice to impart even at the tender age of 27. “Don’t be a product of your environment. Make your environment a product of you.” After being the recipient of much criticism and even some ridicule for his The Green Solution company idea, he has learned that if you believe in an ideal strongly enough and are still met with sideways looks and a laugh, you must keep your mind open to the possibility that, in fact, you are “really crazy or doing something really right! Luckily for me, it wasn’t long before the Government jumped on the bandwagon,” he says with a laugh.

Moreover, this advice also applies to younger members of the JPPS-Bialik community as well as the adults. Ilan is firm in his conviction that while one absorbs an immense amount of knowledge in high school, the habits and values that form a person begin at a much earlier age “because there is no school for common sense. You can teach people that at any age, so why not start as early as possible?”

If you would like to speak to Ilan about his environmental consulting services, please call 514.812.4526 or email him at Ilan@TheGreenSolution.net
The Green Solution’s website – www.thegreensolution.net - is currently under construction.

Erratum from March Newsletter

Oops. There was a mistake in the March newsletter in the article called Art Reigns Supreme. Noted artist Peter Krausz visited Illana Assouline’s Grade 6 class, not a Grade 4 class. Also, Mr. Krausz visited the school not as part of Irène Krausz art appreciation program, but because he was specifically invited to the school by Grade 6 student, Noah Mendelson, who had previously interviewed Mr. Krausz as part of a class project. Sorry for that error!

Concert Gala 2010

Concert Gala 2010A record amount, over $130,000 net (not including $15,000 paid to Bialik Theatre for their highlights performance of Hello, Dolly!), was generated from our annual gala. While a huge thank you goes out to our principal event sponsors, Point Zero and Bench, and to those who attended, those who purchased ads, Talmidim, raffle tickets, as well as to those who donated and bid on auction items, Ryan Kligman and Adam Shapiro, graduates from 2009 and Bialik Theatre veterans and our live auctioneers, really conveyed what it was all about – for the benefit of the JPPS-Bialik students! We are indebted to them. Their sincerity was just as evident as were their comedic talents and comfort on the stage, something Bialik students learn well thanks to its flagship Theatre program.  As well, we must acknowledge and thank Freda Rashkovan, who so eloquently introduced our honourees, Benjamin Roskies  JPS ’44 Z”L, Ruth Roskies-Wisse JPS ’49, Eva Roskies-Raby JPS ’55, and David Roskies JPS ’61.  Special mention must be made about the members of the JPPS-Bialik administration who were there in full force. They are sending a strong message of support of “their” school and “their” students. We express our appreciation to them as well as to each and every member of the very large committee of volunteers who made it all possible.  We have already met to talk about next year, so stay tuned!

Passover at JPPS

Passover at JPPSThey say that a picture is worth a thousand words. Taking a look at Pre-K students Raphael Switzer, Gabriel Betito, Jaclyn Kazaz, and Mikanoa Simard-Medina, I think that it’s pretty evident class seders at JPPS were just like I remembered them, haimish and fun!

One way to show appreciation for your child’s teachers!

As we go into the home stretch of the school year, you may be considering how to recognize your children’s teachers, particularly for those who excelled! Excelling or not, you know as well as I that teachers are key to your child’s success and deserve our thanks. They are the unsung heroes toiling away in the classroom day-in, day-out, determined to make a difference in the lives of our students.

One family recently found a novel way of recognizing the teachers, administrators and staff who have made a difference in their child’s very important years at Bialik. Jeremy Little is graduating this year so after five years, more than 50 faculty and staff were identified for which his parents, Susan Orenstein Little and Bennett Little, donated an amount for each – and cards were sent to each stating that a donation was made in their honour.

David Smajovits ’00, who happened to have worked with Jeremy Little, was touched by this gesture, turning the card over in his hands, and saying this sort of thing doesn’t happen very often… in fact, never so far!

We thank Susan Orenstein Little and Bennett Little for their inspiring gesture. If this is something that you wish to consider, please contact me at: 514-731-2944, ext. 220 or by email at: Elizabeth.k@jppsbialik.ca.

Is your child’s Bar Mitvah/Bat Mitvah coming up?

Among the myriad tasks you will have on your t0-do list will be invitations. Let JPPS-Bialik help! Classic invitations personalized in the name of each of your guests will be prepared, as per your needs, in return for a donation to JPPS-Bialik. Response cards, addressed envelopes for your guests, even added special inserted invitations to related events, can be provided at competitive prices. This is truly something to consider for such a momentous occasion for your son or daughter. As explained by Marnie Mitnick Cohen JPPS ’78, who first approached JPPS-Bialik to consider this initiative, “By supporting the school in the process makes it even more poignant a celebration.” Marnie added, “Those who have received the invitations have been very touched by this gesture.” We thank Marnie for taking the lead on this and hope that other JPPS parents will consider JPPS-Bialik when it comes to having their invitations prepared. Please call Elizabeth Kennell at 514-731-2944, ext. 220 or email her at Elizabeth.k@jppsbialik.ca for more information.

Ride to Conquer Cancer

Ride to Conquer CancerI have yet to meet someone whose life hasn’t been affected by cancer. On July 10th and 11th I’m planning on embarking on my second Ride to Conquer Cancer with my husband, Garry and son, Richard ’08, with over 1,000 other people to help find a cure. I’ve never been an athlete so riding my bike 280 kms to Quebec City over two days last year was the biggest challenge of my life but it was an extremely rewarding journey. We hope you can join us in finding a cure! For more information – www.conquercancer.ca

Win a Team Canada Olympic Replica Jersey signed by Jarome Iginla!

Jarome IginlaWonders will never cease! Yes, you could be the proud of owner of a Team Canada Olympic Replica Jersey signed by Jarome Iginla, by simply responding to the 2nd appeal to our 2009-2010 annual giving campaign, generously donated by JPPS parents Mark and Cindy Heller. For those who have not yet contributed this year (beginning July 1, 2009), a letter will be in your mailboxes over the next few weeks asking for your support.  We sincerely hope you will be able to contribute if not for the benefit of the school, for the chance to win this incredible jersey valued at $500!

As co-chairs this year we have been encouraged by having a full-fledged committee who are committed to doing what they can to bring about continuous improvements to JPPS-Bialik and to ensuring the school remains accessible to all Jewish children, regardless of their family’s financial means.  Whether a current parent, alum, or a parent of an alum, even grandparent, each one believes strongly in the mission of the school.

Whether you decide to designate your gift to the Class of2010 Legacy Gift, as many parents of Secondary V students are doing – so that a scoreboard can be purchased for the original gym –, or to the libraries of JPPS or Bialik, or to financial aid, each and every gift is meaningful, no matter the size, and each donor receives a receipt for income tax purposes as well as our sincere gratitude.

We have also been encouraged by the progress we are making to our $180,000 goal. We are short by approximately only $45,000. If everyone who receives a letter donates, we will succeed. It takes a village…

So, on behalf of JPPS-Bialik, please accept our gratitude to those who have generously contributed. You understand the difference we can make!

Lisa Slawner ‘85 and Larry Zoltak ‘76, Co-chairs

P.S. If you have already contributed this year, you will not receive a letter but that doesn’t mean that you can’t contribute again and thereby be eligible to win this incredible Team Canada Jersey!

Bialik SSX and Awards Night

Bialik SSX and Awards NightAlways an extremely popular and lively event, the Bialik Student Stock Exchange recently transformed the lunchroom into an impressive food court. As part of the larger, Montreal-wide Student Stock Exchange competition, Bialik students took full advantage of their Contemporary World classes by actually starting their own company and selling shares of that company.

On the evening of Wednesday, May 5, Bialik will be the host to many other high schools as we present the Finals and Awards evening for the Student Stock Exchange program. We are extremely excited that Bialik alumnus from the class of 1981 and current C.E.O. of Harrah’s Interactive Entertainment Inc., Mitch Garber, will give a keynote address about the business world. Bialik took home the prestigious “Most Outstanding Innovation” award at last year’s awards night, and we are surely looking forward to impressing the judges one more time.

JPPS Helps Haiti

JPPS Helps HaitiAt JPPS-Bialik, helping people around the world during times of need is second nature to us. To that end, JPPS students innately knew that they had to act following the tragic earthquake in Haiti. What began first as a small class project from Rita Guindi’s Grade 6 class, quickly mushroomed into a successful school-wide initiative. The idea? Ask their parents for donation money only after completing various chores around their houses!

After the initial success in Rita Guindi’s class, AKA, “Mme. Rita,” the students decided to spread their initiative to the whole school. They went to all the other classes, described their project, and helped them write letters to their own parents in order to explain the initiative. The students were in charge of daily reminders and collecting and tabulating the money. In the lobby of the school, they posted a chart to show how much money was collected by each grade in order to encourage participation.

JPPS Goes Rock & Roll…and Bach!

JPPS Goes Rock & Roll…and Bach! The Bertha & Nathan Gillman JPPS Music Festival was held on April 14 in front of a packed gym of music lovers. Talented young musicians from all grade levels dazzled the audience with pieces ranging from J.S. Bach to modern-day rock and roll. JPPS would like to extend their grateful appreciation to Mrs. Fidelia Lang for her generous support of these concerts in memory of her parents Bertha and Nathan Gillman. As well, the concert would not have been a reality without the tremendous work of the 2010 Music Festival Committee; thanks must be extended to committee members Simone Blatt, Cynthia Weinstein, and Jacquie Young.

JPPS: 2010 Canadian National Mathematics League Champions, Yet Again

JPPS: 2010 Canadian National Mathematics League Champions, Yet AgainFollowing an exciting Winter Olympics that saw our nation “Own the Podium,” JPPS is also proudly celebrating a championship on a national level, as the brilliant JPPS team of 15 Grade 6 students has won the annual Canadian National Mathematics League competition for the elementary school level for the second consecutive year! By finishing first overall in Canada, JPPS, by extension, also placed first in their home province of Quebec, and exceeded the scores of the 324 other participating schools in Canada.

The impressive news does not end there. With a perfect score of 100% (40 questions correct out of 40), JPPS student Michael Luger received the highest score in all of Canada! Moreover, five of his classmates, Arielle Grossman, Jessica Young, Aidan Strasser, Jonathan Werbitt, and Matthew Zoltak, placed among the five highest results (including ties) in the entire province of Quebec!

Since 1977, over one million elementary and secondary students in North America participate every year in the contest. The elementary school version of the contest consists of 40 multiple-choice questions given in a 30-minute time period. The team score for each school is the sum of the top five scores for that school. A perfect team score for a single contest would be 200. JPPS’s grand total was an unparalleled 191 out of 200.

Sheila Perry, teacher of the winning class, and Ireene Wolfson, longtime JPPS math teacher and team mentor, demonstrated their sense of pride with the following brief joint statement: “We are very proud of the effort and accomplishments of our students.”

The contest questions are designed to cover a range of mathematical knowledge for each grade level. Topics focus mainly on exponents, geometry, and especially logic.

Here is the complete list of 15 names. Congrats!

Sounds of Freedom Concert

Sounds of Freedom ConcertFresh off celebrating Israel’s 62nd birthday in downtown Montreal with 13,000 friends, the JPPS Junior Choir and the YM-YWHA Youth String Orchestra (YSO) have decided that they are in no mood to end the party. The Jewish community is therefore cordially invited to the first ever “Sounds of Freedom” Concert on the evening of May 3, 2010, at 7:30 pm.
Featuring an array of classical, popular and Jewish music, the concert will not only be the JPPS Choir singing (conducted by Elena Khitrin) accompanied by the YSO, but also the YSO will be giving a separate nine-piece performance! The YSO was founded in 1995 by its current conductor, Pavel Feldman, himself a former violinist from the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. The YSO’s objectives are manifold and include: training young musicians in musical ensemble performances, enriching and refining their musical repertoire and capacity, and, naturally, preparing them for on-stage performances before large audiences. Thus far, the orchestra has performed more than 50 concerts given in community centers, synagogues, and hospitals.

Elena Khitrin has been the conductor of the exceptional JPPS choir for the past three years. Under her impressive and creative direction, the children have acquired an extensive musical education, and are continuing our school's long tradition of musical excellence. Over the past several years, the choir has performed at multiple events including the JPPS-Bialik Gala Concert and the community Yom Ha'atzmaut celebration.

The Bialik Performing Arts Complex, located at 6500 Kildare Road in Cote St. Luc, will be the venue for this event. Tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens, and may be purchased at the door.

If you are a music lover, and wish to support our youth in their own musical endeavors, this promises to be an unforgettable evening that must not be missed.

The Green Solution Comes to JPPS

Ilan ElbazJPPS Grade 4 classes were recently treated to a special “green” presentation on climate change and energy saving by Bialik alumnus, Ilan Elbaz, from the class of 2000. Ilan, the founder and C.E.O. of The Green Solution, an environmental consulting company, had the audience fully engaged as he connected with the students on their own level. Ilan also handed out biodegradable pencils (even the eraser is environmentally friendly as it does not contain material from rain forests!), Earth Day 2010 buttons, and a special flyer for parents about reducing energy consumption.

After the talk, Ilan was very impressed with the amount of knowledge the students had already grasped from regular class time; a testament to the JPPS teachers!

Inaugural Goodman Cancer Research Gala

Please read all about this most important fundraising event that is being organized by a parent of Bialik alumni, Rosalind Goodman, and Bialik alumna, Shawna Goodman-Sone ‘88. Bialik Alumna, Heidi Majnemer ’79, is also on the organizing committee.

In 2008, thanks to a significant gift from Rosalind and Morris Goodman, the McGill Cancer Centre was renamed the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Research Centre in their honour. This state-of-the-art Centre has energized cancer research taking place in the Faculties of Medicine and Science by attracting world-class investigators and accelerating collaborative exchanges between clinic-based researchers investigating the nature of cancer and their lab-based colleagues working to develop and test potential treatments for patients.

On June 5, 2010, McGill will host the inaugural Goodman Cancer Research Gala to celebrate the Centre’s accomplishments and raise important funds that will support tomorrow’s cancer breakthroughs. This prestigious fundraising event, hosted by the Faculty of Medicine and Rosalind and Morris Goodman, will bring together many of Montreal’s successful, influential citizens and other high profile individuals from across Canada who are committed to advancing cancer research.

The Diller Teen Fellows Program

The Diller Teen Fellows ProgramAs mentioned in Andrew Trager’s message at the top, Bialik students recently participated in a program called the Diller Teen Fellows. What follows is a brief outline of the program as told to me by Jon Nadler, a Bialik Secondary 5 student who took part.

“The Diller Teen Fellows program is almost the exact same program as the Bronfman Israel Experience, but it takes place mostly in the United States. Students from grades 10 and 11 join a year-long leadership program. Every North American city is paired up with an Israeli city. Montreal's is Be’er Sheva. First, the Israelis come to Montreal, and then we're with them during the programming for most of their two week trip. Towards the end of their trip, we host one or two in our homes, and even bring them to our school for the day.
In July, we leave to Israel for the ISS (Israel summer seminar), and we tour the country with the Israelis from Be’er Sheva, and then for a week, some Israelis host us in their homes. The experience is designed to increase leadership skills for young adolescents, and hope that these kids will make a larger impact on their Jewish community in the future. Moreover, we meet with many important leaders in the Jewish community, and we do a lot of volunteer work throughout the year, as a group, in Montreal and again when we leave to Israel. All in all, it’s been a really cool program!”

The photo was taken on a retreat to Camp Papillion with the Israelis.

Kozee Corner and the Auberge Shalom Read-a-Thon

Kozee Corner and the Auberge Shalom Read-a-ThonThe staff of the library at JPPS has always prided themselves on making our environment friendly and relaxing; a place to get away from the stresses of classroom demands. Over the years, we have noticed that in the younger grades, 1-3, teachers often send the children to read in the library as a reward for finishing work early or for good behaviour. The children were always trying to find a corner where they could enjoy their time and relax with a good book.
Now they have a special corner in which to relax. The “Kozee Corner” has been designed to encourage students to read to themselves, each other, or to one of our stuffed animals during their “Special Time” away from class. Now that there is a special place to call their own, all of the students from K to 6 are clamoring to get a pass from their teacher to spend time in the “Kozee Corner.”

Kozee Corner and the Auberge Shalom Read-a-ThonFor the past few years, the JPPS library has successfully raised money for the Multiple Sclerosis through a read-a-thon. This year, we launched a read-a-thon to raise money for Auberge Shalom, a home for battered and fractured families.
The children from grades 1 to 6 read books and raised more than $2000. We salute them and thank the children and their families for their love of reading, and for their sense of giving tzadaka.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes

JDRFDid you know that there are over 300,000 children living with Type 1 Diabetes just in Canada alone? Did you also know that the disease strikes people at any time for no known reason?

The Walk to Cure Diabetes is a family event taking place across Canada on June 13th, 2010, that seeks to raise awareness of the disease, and to raise funds that will be directly donated to research. This year, JPPS is fortunate to have a direct link to this vital cause as Adina Singer, mother of JPPS student and diabetes sufferer, Jordana, is the Co- President of the JDRF Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes. Moreover, Jordana has taken on the role of captain of her Family Team for the Walk that historically raises thousands of dollars to help find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.

Climate Project Canada Comes to Bialik

Climate Project Canada Comes to BialikThe Climate Project Canada was created in May, 2007, with the objective of educating Canadians about the science and impact of climate change as well as solutions to address it. The CPC is a non-profit organization that serves as the Canadian component of a global movement of more than 3,000 diverse and dedicated volunteers from around the world. These volunteers have been personally trained by former US Vice President and Nobel Laureate, Al Gore, to educate the public about the science and impacts of climate change as well as solutions to address the climate crisis. One of these trained presenters, Peter Schiefke, recently came to Bialik to educate students about climate change. He was very well received by the students.

Class of 1989 and 1999 Reunion recaps

Class of 1989 and 1999 ReunionRight before the start of the Passover, Bialik classes of 1989 and 1999 held their 20 and 10-year reunions. The 1989 reunion, hosted at Chili’s Hamburger Bar, and organized by a committee that included: Ronald Balinsky, Simone Freedman, Josh Levy, Holli Rubin, Ezra Soiferman, and Jessica Yaffe, put on quite the party that attracted over 80 graduates and 10 teachers. I’m told that several songs were played on Barry Kirsh's old classical guitar by The Gerbils. I’m also told that the party lasted until 3AM, way past my bedtime!

Class of 1989 and 1999 ReunionTurning to the class of 1999, 49 graduates and three teachers also partied late into the night at Bar Frapées, a “classic” hangout spot from that time. Big thanks go out to organizers Daniel Burbela, Talia Rosberger, and Beverly Shimansky.

Note: Special thanks go the Class of 1989 who made a very significant donation in honour of their 20th anniversary reunion and in memory of both their teacher, Barry Kirsh, and their classmate, Tal Shochat. A special mezuzah will be installed in his memory on his mother Ruth Shochat’s classroom later this spring.

Yom Hashoah at JPPS and Bialik

It’s quite possible that teaching about the Holocaust and commemorating those years may, in fact, be the most important lessons our students take from their years at JPPS-Bialik. With the reality that Holocaust survivors are becoming fewer and fewer, and due to the fact that Anti-Semitism is hardly diminishing in the world, this point only becomes further accentuated. To that end, JPPS and Bialik both took steps to honour the Shoah victims on Yom HaShoah.

Yom Hashoah at JPPSJPPS held a ceremony at Congregation Shomrim Laboker where songs were sung, tributes were said, and memorial candles were lit.  This was part of a larger project where JPPS students were individually paired up with a young Holocaust victim in order for the students to attempt to get to know someone very young who perished.

Yom Hashoah at BialikAt Bialik, an assembly was held where a message from the Bialik contingent of the March of the Living was read to the entire school. The Bialik choir, conducted by Lorna Smith, moreover gave a solemn performance. After the assembly, a group of five students Gabe Steinberg, Becky Luger, Einav Ne’Eman, Shaun Nishmas, and Noam Shalev, traveled to the steps of the Montreal City Hall to read names of Holocaust victims out loud to the public. That inititive was organized by B’nai Brith. Thank you to Heidi Oppen ’00 for the invitation.

March of the Living Report

No doubt many of you are connected in some way or another to a participant of this year’s March of the Living, or a MOL trip that has taken place in the past. In this space, I would like to highlight personal reflections of the trip by the participants themselves. There will be much more about the MOL in the next newsletter, including information about the Bialik choir performing live in Poland and in Israel. I could only imagine how emotional that may have been.

David Smajovits ‘00

March of the Living

“We started our day off with an extremely emotional tour of the concentration/extermination camp called Auschwitz. We began our tour by walking through the exact gas chamber and crematorium that many of the Jewish people went through. I was fortunate enough to be able to go through that part while linking arms with Steve, whom is one of our survivors on our trip, as he comforted me as I broke down. He continuously told me, along with a few of my friends that “it was alright to cry and to let out feelings” and that “we were the winners and we are the strong ones.”
Taylor Madew

March of the Living

“…I noticed an enormous field filled with thousands of stones that were put up representing the cities, communities and individuals that were affected. At one point, I stumbled across one stone that meant so much to me. The stone read “Czenstechova,” a village that was transformed into a ghetto where my grandmother, along with her entire family were brought to at the beginning of the war. My grandmother was the only one in her entire family of eight brothers and sisters to remain in the ghetto until the end of the war. The rest were brought to Treblinka where they were killed. Until she passed away two years ago, my grandmother was an extremely strong woman, and to think that her entire family was taken away from her because of the events of the Holocaust will forever affect me. Standing in that same area where my extended family was killed sent chills throughout my body. As I placed a rock on top of the stone in memory of my family, the tragic reality of the Holocaust never felt closer to my heart. The words “never forget” will forever resonate in my mind.”

Ralph Peters Delivers a Good Dose of Reality

Ralph PetersSometimes, one needs a good dose of reality in order to see the world in a clearer perspective. Such was the case at Montreal’s Congregation Shomrim Laboker, as popular television military analyst and noted author of 25 books, Ralph Peters, addressed the Canadian Institute for Jewish Research’s (CIJR) Irwin Beutel Colloquium the morning of March 21st. The Colloquium is one of several per year that the CIJR organizes as part of their Student Israel-Advocacy Program, an initiative designed to educate campus students about Israel advocacy.

Using a “wide angle lens,” as the retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel put it, the audience was treated to fascinating, passionate, and straightforward analysis of the geopolitical situation vis-à-vis the Middle East, South Asia, and the West. Covering a gamut of issues that encompass this topic, an important facet of his talk was the fact that policy makers and military strategists in the West consistently ignore the truth that much of the violence in the world today is a by-product of borders that colonialists mapped out solely for their self-interests. Regardless of a given ethnicity’s natural boundaries, the borders of many countries were set in such a way that provided protection for the colonialists’ economic adventures, ahead of any other concern.

In Mr. Peters’ words, the European colonialists “Forced people to be together who do not want to be together, or they pushed people apart who do want to be together.” This situation, repeated time and again, is the reason why tens of millions of Kurds and Pashtuns are without a country of their own, and moreover, have been victims of domineering forces throughout recent history. Taking a more Israel-centred point of view, this is the same reason why many hawks on the Israeli side of the ledger submit the argument that the State of Palestine has already been created, and it is called the Kingdom of Jordan.

Armed with vast experience in military intelligence, Mr. Peters reminded the audience that seeing the world as one wishes it to be, instead of as it actually is, carries with it only terrible consequences. Commenting with respect to the war in Afghanistan, and the apparent lack of genuine progress in bringing peace to that country, Mr. Peters bluntly stated that “We are not asking them to change their form of government; we are asking them to change their civilization, and it’s very, very hard to persuade a human being to do that.”

Simchas and Condolences

Simchas

  • Mazel Tov to Bialik guidance councilor, Janet Dwoskin, on the engagement of her daughter, Aliza! She will be marrying Jason Perlman.

Condolences

  • The family of Mervin Butovsky, father of the late Avriel Butovsky.
  • The family of Edythe Bucovetsky
  • The family of longtime JPPS staff member, Genia Burstein.

A heartfelt thank-you goes out to Mona Nadel for the following tribute to her former colleague, Genia Burstein.

Mrs. Genia Burstein (1911-2010) was a highly respected teacher who taught Hebrew and Yiddish at JPPS for many years.

Mrs. Burstein, a Holocaust survivor, was always grateful to Shloime Wiseman, the principal at JPPS, who hired her even though she was unable to show him any credentials to support her claims that she graduated Teacher’s College and had teaching experience in Europe before the war.

Mrs. Burstein soon won Mr. Wiseman’s appreciation as she proved to be an excellent teacher. She adapted easily to the ongoing changes in education and added a degree of creativity to all her work. The backboards in her classrooms were consistently outstanding.

Mrs. Burstein will always be remembered warmly by the many adults who were fortunate to have been taught by her.
