Message from the President of JPPS-Bialik

Arnold CohenShana Tova! It is a new year for JPPS-Bialik too! New in many respects, including at the Board level, with one – not two – newly constituted JPPS-Bialik Boards. In streamlining our governance structure, the Board’s size was reduced to a more manageable 18, from 50+ members on two boards. Each is a member of at least one committee: Finance, Strategic Planning, Governance, Advancement, Parent Council or Head of School, and judging by our first few meetings, much will be accomplished because they are focused and determined to have the school grow from strength to strength. This includes undertaking a strategic plan that will guide us over the next five years, and it begins with a Board retreat this evening (November 1st).

I had the privilege of attending the first JPPS-Bialik Welcome Back BBQ on September 2nd. To see Bialik’s still new Helen and Sam Steinberg Gymnasium filled to the brim with staff and families was a sheer delight. I know that JPPS Principal Adina Matas was thrilled to see such a large turnout from JPPS. These youngsters were eager participants in activities organized by Bialik senior students. They certainly had a glimpse of what is in store for them as they continue on to Bialik. The atmosphere was similar at the Bialik Open House I attended on October 13th. Parents are coming earlier, with kids in tow, many in Grade 5 as well as Grade 6. JPPS and Solomon Schechter students were joined by many from Dollard as well as from TMR, St. Laurent and NDG. We welcome them all, regardless of their background or geographic location. That's what makes the JPPS-Bialik mishpuche so special-its diversity in welcoming in families from all parts of the city (and beyond) from varying backgrounds, each making their unique contribution.

Message from the Head of School

Laurence FhimaOur first newsletter of the 2010-2011 year may seem late, but really it isn’t when you consider that students spent very little of September in the classroom, let alone in the school! We did spend a great deal of time with family and friends celebrating and observing to various degrees, and in many different ways, our high holidays. When not in the classroom, time was even spent in sukkot at both JPPS and Bialik, in order to celebrate the Festival of Sukkot for which Bialik built its own sukkah to Judaic law specifications. Now Bialik will have one to call its own, and be able to focus on the yearly ritual of its decoration and eating in it. It was really quite the undertaking, and would not have happened had it not been for the JPPS-Bialik parents who donated their time, expertise and materials, and what made us really proud, Secondary V student volunteers! (See full newsletter article below.)

Not nearly as exciting perhaps, but equally, if not more, important, JPPS-Bialik has had its Quebec operating permit renewed for another three years! This happens only following a rigorous review, including visits by Quebec government officials ensuring that we meet all their requirements.
At the same time, negotiations for a new contract with our teachers are ongoing with union officials. I am confident that they will go well as we ultimately share the same goals, and are fortunate enough to have one of Bialik’s teachers, Mordechai Antal, of Bialik Stock Exchange fame, as President of the Federation of Teachers of Jewish Day Schools this year!

I am proud to report that enrollment is up at JPPS-Bialik, especially at Bialik, with yet again a near record-enrollment of 138 students in Secondary I. Compared with 122 students last year, they include a growing number in our Section Française, much to the delight of Bialik’s new Coordonnateur des études françaises, Monsieur Jean-Claude Rubier. We can predict that Bialik’s Section Française will continue to grow, as JPPS’ Section Française is attracting an increasing number of students, even those with eligibility! We are gradually becoming a top choice for those who wish to ensure their proficiency in French and a future in Quebec!

While Bialik’s Director of Judaic Studies, Rabbi Daniel Rosenberg left us to pursue a position in Chicago, the important changes he helped us bring to Bialik’s Judaic Studies program are being implemented, including the introduction of the NETA Hebrew language program, under the direction of Hanna Eliashiv, Judaic Studies Curriculum Coordinator, Eti Kimchi, Judaic Studies Co-curricular Coordinator and Rabbi Mark Fishman, Jewish Life Coordinator. We are also actively engaged in the search for a new Director of Judaic Studies for the 2011-2012 school year and will keep you informed as to our progress.

In the meantime, you will be as excited as I am with a new initiative: Parent Education Evenings at Bialik open to the community, not just JPPS-Bialik parents. The first is scheduled for November 22nd at 7:15 pm at Bialik, with Rabbi Mark Fishman! Stay tuned for more information on FirstClass, as this will be the first of many to come.

We look forward to an enriching and successful 2010-2011 year for all.

Message from the Principal of Bialik

Shireen ButmanWelcome back to a great new school year at Bialik! For those of you who are newcomers to our school, we encourage your active involvement in a unique school community where pride, tradition and excellence continue to be our ethos.   Bialik is truly a “Triple A School” (Academics, Athletics, and the Arts), and our dedicated faculty continue to prove it as they have consistently done throughout our school’s 97 years of commitment to Jewish education.

As the new principal of Bialik, I am humbled by the privilege and proud of the honor to lead a school such as Bialik, alongside a highly professional and dedicated administrative team. I believe in giving students a firm foundation that will prepare them for life - a strong academic program, a great work ethic, a profound sense of community, and, most importantly, a strong Jewish identity grounded in Jewish values.

As our students settle back into school life after celebrating many Jewish holidays, we should be thankful for the many blessings in our lives.

We would like to welcome nine new teachers to our school, as well as the following members who have joined Bialik’s administrative team - French Studies Coordinator, Mr. Jean-Claude Rubier, and Mrs. Hanna Eliashiv, Judaic Studies Curriculum Coordinator, who is also responsible for the implementation of our new Hebrew program, NETA.

Message from the Principal of JPPS

Adina Matas“Caring School:  The JPPS Community Nurturing the Whole Child”

We are very proud of the great start we have had to this school year.  During the first months of school our students have been very focused on their learning activities and developing friendships.  As educators, we consider this the most important time of the school year.  During this time we model, practice and celebrate learner expectations. For all students, direction-following, learning and transitioning throughout the school day is hard work.  We are very proud of their effort – junior pre-k through sixth grade.

The 2010-2011 school year theme is “Caring School:  The JPPS Community Nurturing the Whole Child”.  Our goal is to provide an environment that is safe and caring, and where excellence in learning is a priority and everyone feels included.  We have launched the annual theme with a “Hand Project” to promote and foster dignity and respect for self and others.

We are committed to celebrating the clip_image005.jpgdreams and achievements of our students as they come to life in their hearts and in their minds.  Our hallways are filled with the artwork and creative writing of our students.  We are proud of the well-rounded, broad-based education we offer to students at all levels.  For us, excellence means more than just high marks.  Studying the curriculum means learning to think critically, to do research, and to express opinions.  Students are challenged to deepen reading comprehension skills and to write with voice and clarity.  The new math curriculum sets a high priority on engaging students in multiple strategies for solving problems and thinking mathematically.

Teachers are using manipulatives and giving students opportunities to describe how they came up with an answer, rather than just accepting a right answer.  We are pleased to be implementing the new math curriculum at the Kindergarten level this year.  I am proud of the fine work teachers are doing to learn the new program emphasis and to engage students in meaningful learning activities.

This school year, in French studies, our Arts Education has expanded to acquaint students in grades 1 – 6 with the creative process of Drama.  The goal of this is to develop the student’s artistic sensibility, creative potential, acting abilities and skills in self-expression and communication.

In addition to teaching and learning, our teachers have also been hard at work in various professional development activities.

We have centered our professional work to establish teams of teachers who work collaboratively, develop strategic goals, monitor student learning and refine instructions, so that all students can work to achieve a higher level.

clip_image002.jpg

I would like to thank our Home and School volunteers for their contribution, and for the success of the Book Sale, Hot Lunch Program, Open House, Sukkah Visits and school photos.  Our students benefit from the strong parental support for learning at home and in school.  As we all work towards a strong enrolment for the next school year, I appreciate parents who serve as ambassadors, telling friends and neighbours about the fine teaching and learning we do here.  Your support is critical in creating and sustaining a vibrant JPPS school community.

Message from The Director of the CPE

The Children’s Centre is back in full swing after a veryrandyZ_2010.jpg successful summer camp program. Our three-year old program is filled with the smiling faces of our children, whose transition into school was very smooth in spite of all of the holidays in September.  The Pre-K children are the big shots in our building! The transition was easy for them as they are already familiar with our routines.  The children and staff spent a lot of time preparing for the holidays, and everyone went home with art projects, new vocabulary words and songs to celebrate the New Year.  We prepared for Sukkot by building our own mini sukkahs.  We visited two different sukkahs; One was at a staff member’s house, and the other was at the synagogue next door, where we were invited to have lunch. Fortunately the weather cooperated, and a good time was had by all. At the end of the month we went to Mont St. Gregoire for a fun day of apple picking.  You would be amazed at how many different things we can make from apples!

In between all of the holidays, the children discussed their families and learned their addresses and phone numbers.  As well, they were taught about safety in and around their homes and school.  There was a lengthy discussion about how and when to use 911, and we feel confident that they could be of help should an emergency arise.  We are spending as much time as possible outdoors in the fresh air, in anticipation of the long, cold, but fun winter ahead.  Now that the holidays are over, we are settling into a routine that is filled with interesting, educational, and fun programs.

Message from JPPS Home and School

The JPPS Home and School executive would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year, and welcome you all back to school.  In spite of all the short school weeks, we have already been very hard at work and have accomplished quite a lot! The school year started with a successful book and used uniform sale. Thanks to all of the parents who volunteered their time. We also helped in the celebration of the holiday of Sukkot. The children went to the sukkah and enjoyed grape juice and honey cake, provided and served by Home and School volunteers. Soon after, we organized and ran the class photo sessions. The pictures will be distributed during parent/teacher interviews.

Every Friday and holiday, we distribute challahs to those families who ordered them. The hot lunch program is also well under way, and the children seem to be loving our new and varied menu. Home and School also hosted an open breakfast meeting. It was great to meet new parents and hear different ideas. We welcome them and anyone else who would be interested in getting involved. When you are in the school, make sure to check out the display case in the lobby. It is filled with all sorts of Home and School information and pictures. The Entertainment book sale is also wrapping up. Once again, it was a huge success and we thank all of you who supported us by purchasing books. We look forward to being involved in many more activities this coming year. Look out for our upcoming annual Chanukah party, which is sure to be a blast!

Message from Bialik Home and School

It’s hard to believe that November is here, and we will begin our early Shabbat dismissals. One of the primary responsibilities of Home and School at Bialik is to provide a little something extra around the Yom Tovs.  Our students enjoyed individual honey cakes for Rosh Hashanah. This year Home and School had the pleasure to supply Bialik’s new sukkah with treats for its grand opening.  Mrs. Fleisher and the Home and School have organized many other holiday enrichments for the students.

This is a fun time in school and we are always looking for parents to help out.  High school parent involvement is quiet different from that on the elementary level.  We at Home and School do have a number of projects that we could use a little help with.  Some are large and some may just involve one afternoon. If anyone is interested, please feel free to contact me on FirstClass .

This year Home and School says good-bye and thank you to Cheryl Monk, who has chaired the book sale for too many years to count.  Her tireless efforts over the years have made this enormous project so successful.  As well, I would like to thank all the wonderful volunteers who came out to help in between preparing for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Message from the Parent Council

Wow, what a start to the year!  A bigger-than-ever Secondary I class, a fantastic new Principal and a great new parent council!

As we get into full gear, your newly-formed parent council is already hard at work.

Your parent council Vice-Presidents, Lisa Blatt Alexander '81 and Nina Heft Josephson '81, have hit the ground running, and with the leadership of Shari Segal Gordon (chair), they have started a new outreach program for all incoming parents. We will help familiarize them with the “ins and outs” of the school, or in the case that they should need resource help.

We have started to work on improving our existing communication system with the help of your communication chair Debra Rosenthal, in order to help us reach a greater number of parents through FirstClass.

We are actively working on some new fundraising initiatives, and there are many more new interactive initiatives to come.

We are planning a general meeting of all parent council members ( that being all parents!) sometime in November, with the date and time yet to be confirmed.

We welcome any and all parents who would like to get involved, or have any ideas to help improve life in or outside of the
school, for our children and parents to come forward and speak up.  We would love to hear from everyone.  If you have an idea to enrich any part of the school, tell us; we would love to hear it.

Don't forget Blue Rodeo tickets and sponsorships.  Remember every dollar we raise and every ticket we sell comes right back to the school.  Please keep it coming!

If you want to reach us, our email address is bpc@jppsbialik.ca

Thanks to all of you who give tirelessly of your time and remember:

“Don't ever question the value of volunteers. Noah's Ark was built by volunteers; the Titanic was built by professionals.

Have a great November...

JPPS-Bialik Athletics

Athletics at Bialik has kicked into full swing since the Boys and Girls JISA Soccer teams were able to claim Gold medals at this year’s’ tournament. Bialik also offered a Bantam Girls Division 3 soccer team this season. This team has been competing in the private school girls’ league, and they are having fun doing it!

touch football.jpgOur Juvenile boys were entrenched in an exciting touch football season that saw them finish with a record of two wins and three losses.  They still had an opportunity in the playoffs at the time this article was written.

Bialik is pleased to announce the return of its Athlete-of the-Month award, beginning with the next newsletter, as well as the return of the Wrestling program for the upcoming winter sports season.

JPPS-Bialik is also entering eight boys’ and girls’ teams of varying levels into the Greater Montreal Athletic Association basketball league this season. There will be a plethora of games taking place, including Bialik Bulldogs Pee Wee hockey during the 2010-2011 winter sports season.

On the JPPS front, both JPPS Pugs teams have begun to play in the Wolves Elementary School Basketball League.  And what a start they have had! The JPPS Boys’ Basketball team beat U.T.T. Beutel by a score of 44-10! Way to go, boys, and good luck to both teams this season.

Alum of the month : David Smajovits '00

Back in grade 8, if you were to have asked JPPS-Bialik Alum of the Month David Smajovits.JPGDavid Smajovits ’00 to name his biggest fear, the answer would have been, without a doubt, being called to the blackboard to complete a problem in front of the entire class.

Indeed, this graduate from the class of 2000 isn’t so timid about relaying his fear of math because, “I get paid to write today.” David also isn’t shy about what he has been up to since his high school graduation.  He enrolled in the Commerce program at Dawson College without a real idea of what he wanted to do. Following an uneventful first few semesters, he vividly remembers watching the aftermath of the attacks of September 11, 2001, at Place Alexis Nihon, right after a class ended. The events of that infamous day propelled him to abandon the commerce route pretty fast (a lack of great math skills also helped).

Following Dawson, David majored in political science at Concordia University, knowing full well what the political climate was there at the time.  Taking a step further, he joined the Hillel student group and was eventually elected Co-President in 2005.

“I fed off of the anti-Israel sentiments there. The worse the other side was, the more driven I became to do something about it. It was a lot of fun, actually.”

After graduating Concordia in 2006, David attended a conference called the Intelligence Summit, which essentially was a get-together of current and former intelligence officers from around the world. He was instantly captivated by the world of espionage and intelligence, and pursued an internship with the Intelligence Summit in St. Petersburg, Florida, working side by side with the organization’s President, John Loftus.
“I remember being at John’s house one afternoon when a CIA agent friend of his called to brief him about some listening devices that were planted in an office of a Chinese businessman in New York. I don’t know whatever became of that guy, but I’m sure he’s seen better days.”

When his brief stint in the intelligence community came to a close (he still moonlights however as the Director of Communications for the Intelligence Summit), David was fortunate to have been hired as Communications and Alumni Relations Officer for, you guessed it, JPPS-Bialik. After two years and a fair amount of newsletters later, David moved on, and is currently a Communications officer in the Jewish General Hospital’s Public Affairs & Communications department.

“My time in the JPPS-Bialik advancement department was instrumental for my development as a professional communicator. It was also a riot to work with my former teachers, and to revisit the days of Chanukah assemblies and Purim carnivals.”

Speaking of fond Bialik memories, as a student, there were many. First and foremost, very few people may say that their mother and uncle taught at their high school. Moreover, Jeff Karp, brother of Lainie Smajovits, was even David’s Jewish History teacher one year! And while the subject of teachers is addressed, David always stresses that the reason why a vast majority of Bialik graduates become productive members of society is due to the quality of the teaching.

“You always knew that the teachers cared about your progress. My math teachers were truly disappointed when I bombed a test, but were elated the odd time when I’d do well. Mr. (Leslie) Silverstein is another example. Have you ever seen one of his corrected essays? His corrections are almost as long as the length of the essay!”
JPPS-Bialik will forever hold a significant place in David’s heart. Besides the fact that he spent 13 years there as a student, his aforementioned familial connections, or even his spell as an employee, Bialik High School will always be the place where he met his fiancée, Rosalie Wolkowicz ‘00.

“Looking back at all of this, I suppose I made the right decision not to go to Royal West!”

Family BBQ - an annual tradition

On Thursday, September 2nd, FamilyBBQ_080.jpgover 400 JPPS-Bialik students, staff and their families participated in the First Annual JPPS-Bialik Family BBQ!  With the threat of thundershowers hovering, organizers decided to hold the event in the Helen and Sam Steinberg Auditorium.

What great fun everyone had!  From the old-fashioned carnival games, run by a spirited crew of Secondary V students, to the fabulous sounds of Fresh Entertainment, a great time was had by all.

Advancement’s Atie Waxman, I.T.’s Stephen Toy and Serge Butman (husband of Bialik Principal Shireen Butman) manned the charcoal BBQ and hot dog station, ensuring everone had plenty to eat.  Special mention must be made of the hard work and dedication of our maintenance crew for their tireless efforts. Many thanks must go out to Cott for their donation of soft drinks, Karmin Industries for the giveaways, TCBY for the yummy sorbet, Giggles for the balloons and Mark Bessner for the popcorn and cotton candy.

And we cannot forget the very generous Kucer family for their donation, which ensured a virtually cost-free event, all for the benefit of our students!

Reunions

Class of '85, 25th Reunion

LeeWise.jpgOver the Rosh Hashanah weekend, Lee Wise ’85 and 61 of his classmates celebrated, with gusto, their 25th reunion. Lee reports that 62 of the 92 Bialik graduates from his class showed up, and 30 of those who attended came in from out of town.  Past and present Bialik staff Eli Kogut, Lainie Smajovits and Jeff Karp stayed until almost midnight. The 30 or so who were actually able rolled into the Orange Julep at 4:30 a.m. Through the generosity of Lee and his classmates, over $9,000 was raised to purchase SmartBoards for Bialik classrooms! Kol Hakavod!  May you go from strength to strength!

Class of '90, 20th Reunion

The Bialik class of 1990 recently heldsamantha.jpg its reunion at The Hamburger Chili bar. It was a night filled with memories and laughter, and a video was shown which captured the class through the Bialik years. Another highlight of the evening was that some of our teachers came to see old faces (and we don't mean wrinkled ones)!!!

JPPS French class at the Jean Talon Market

P1010007.JPGAs part of the French curriculum, all of the kindergarten classes went on a trip to the Jean Talon market on Thursday, October 7th.  Even though it was raining, the children had a wonderful time.  They walked down the colourful alleys with their parents, learning the French names of all the fruits and vegetables.  They even got the chance to taste a few of them.  P1010014.JPG

We would like to thank all of the parents who participated in this fun outing.

bialik students don hard hats

It is truly a “labour of love”. A very BialikSucca2010_small.jpgpassionate group of Secondary V students performed yet another mitzvah  for all students at Bialik! They hammered nails, transported lumber, removied scrap all so that Bialik is equipped with a sukkah (a structure that will be decorated and used by our students during Sukkot on a year-to-year basis).

Sukkah.jpg

Many Jewish families built their own sukkot, in preparation for the seven-day long Festival of Sukkot which began on the evening of September 22nd. It is in honour of the holiday’s historical significance, remembering the children of Israel wandering in the desert, living in temporary shelters over forty years. Bialik’s sukkah was built to Judaic law specifications under the direction of Rabbi Mark Fishman, Bialik’s Judaic Life Coordinator. Now Bialik will have one to call its own, and be able to focus on the yearly ritual of its decoration and eating in it.

The students who participated in this project, some of whom are captured in the attached photo, are more than happy to volunteer to make this happen. As Hanna Eliashiv, Bialik’s Judaic Studies Curriculum Coordinator, explained, they see it as their “legacy” to the school, as a lasting testimonial of special Judaic significance. The mitzvah of “Kol Israel arevim ze laze”, all Jews are responsible for one another, has been demonstrated by the volunteers.

None of this would have been possible had JPPS-Bialik parents not donated their time, expertise and materials. This includes architectural design services, foundation work, general contracting and carpentry services, from Georges Elbaz, architect, Steven Miller, John Mendelson JPPS ’77, Richard Stern ‘87, and Ron Mashaal. Hanna Eliashiv and Rabbi Mark Fishman encouraged this project as being mission-appropriate and a tangible way in which to engage the students, not just in its building, but also in its use throughout the Sukkot holiday.

Large enough to fit a class of 25 students, it was not a small undertaking, and involved some heavy lifting and getting dirty. This didn’t bother any of the students, probably because they followed in the footsteps of students who have come before them who had participated in Habitat for Humanity projects in New Orleans and San Diego. And, as Principal Butman said, "why not start at home!"

Gala Co-Chairs Named!

We are thrilled to announce that this year’s annual Concert Gala will be chaired by Sandy Surkis Dalfen and Bev Mitelman Lyman. It will take place on Wednesday, April 6th, and will feature (for all you Beatles fans) Bialik Theatre’s adaptation of Across the Universe!

Sandy is the mother of JPPS students Jacqueline ’17, Jonah ’20 and Zoe ‘26 and brings with her many years of fundraising experience as chair of the ad book, and most recently as Vice-President of the new JPPS Parent Council. Bev is the mother of JPPS students Ethan ‘21 and Jakob ’23, and a new parent to our school system. She brings with her an unmatched enthusiasm, numerous exciting ideas, and a growing list of new parent volunteers.

They are already hard at work with their growing committee, determined to have all JPPS-Bialik parents participate in one way or another. This year’s Concert Gala promises to be our best one yet.

Feeder School Visits

Bialik hosted visits from its feeder schools over the course of the week of October 4th. Students from Hebrew Foundation School, Akiva, Solomon Schechter Academy, and JPPS received personalized tours, classroom visits and mementos to take home with them.  We thank our feeder schools for the visits!

JPPS Mezuzah Initiative

As we all know, every door frame in a Jewish home must have a mezuzah.  As JPPS is a second home to our children, what better way for the staff to show their love for our jewels than by ensuring that each door possesses a new mezuzah?  That’s right!  The JPPS staff, lead by Adina Matas, have begun accepting donations for this very special project.  Sheila Witt, beloved Yiddish teacher, donated the first amount in memory of her son Steven, who passed away in June.  The students and parents of JPPS thank everyone for this very special mitzvah!

Lunch ‘n Learn

G-d – Who is He (She?) and what does He do all day? Does G-d have a body, and if not, then “where” is He? Is there anything about G-d’s existence that is relevant to my life?

These questions and more were recently asked during the latest and newest project launched at Bialik this past week. A Jewish learning program offered at lunchtime allows the junior and senior schools to informally search and ask questions about Judaism, G-d and other such fascinating topics.

Presented in an informal style, students can drop in, bring their lunch and discuss issues that are both challenging and contemporary.

Rabbi Mark Fishman, who returned to Montreal this past September, leads the discussion. On the first day of the project over fifty students came in to check out the lunchtime club held each Tuesday. At first, students were a little hesitant to come and discuss “G-d”, but after a little encouragement, the G-club, as it is now being referred to, is set to become the most popular informal school club since “Glee”. Both the TV show (Glee) and the G-d Club take place on Tuesdays, and Rabbi Fishman hopes that this new Bialik project can become just as popular, if not more so!

For more information, simply join us in the student lounge every Tuesday at lunchtime.

See you there!

Rabbi Mark Fishman

Academic Support… More than a Name Change

Bialik’s Academic Support Program has undergone a transformation.  After being launched more than five years ago as Bialik’s LEAP, or Learning Enhanced Academic Program, it was time for it to be reviewed in light of today’s realities.  As with all ground-breaking and innovative initiatives, if they don’t continue to grow and evolve, they stop meeting the ever-changing needs of the students.  Dr. Ioana Constantinescu spent last year collecting data, consulting with those involved and listening to students, as part of her evaluation of Bialik’s renowned program.  Her assessment has resulted in a new program where students requiring support are neither entirely pulled out, nor completely integrated into the scheduled classes. Instead, depending on the needs of the individual student, different levels of support are provided at different levels, and for different courses.  Building on the existing streaming offered in some courses, and the demands of Quebec’s Ministry of Education’s exams, adjustments are also made.If you take for example a student in Secondary I, who has been assessed as needing full support – versus partial – , he/she and his co-academic support program students are given their own small class for English, reunited with their peers for Drama, given their own small class for Geography or History which is taught in English as opposed to French, reunited again with their peers for Jewish History/ECR, reunited again with their peers for Phys.Ed, given their own small class for Science and then, depending again on their individual needs, use the Yiddish periods for either Study Skills or Math.

Hebrew/Tanach, Math and French are already sufficiently streamed to accommodate the needs of all students. If partial support is called for, then the student joins his/her peers more often, and for the classes where remedial support is not required. At the higher levels, more periods are devoted to core subjects such as English, French, History, Math and Science, depending on the Ministry of Education exam that year, and those classes are smaller, ranging from between 10 and 13 students each and groups are created with as few as 5 to 7 students in them for Math, English and French.

This new model offers more flexibility as well as more integration with their peers. Furthermore, parents pay according to the level of support provided.

Being less segregated or more integrated, where and when appropriate, will ultimately ensure that the student can become a more independent learner and have greater tools for continued success after graduation.  As many parents are fully aware, a critical component to ensuring that this all works is support and skill of the teachers dedicated to these students. Dr. Ioana Constantinescu is confident, especially because she can count on some veteran teachers including Linda Cohen, Andrew Trager and Lainie Smajovits, who are committed to Bialik’s new Academic Support Program as being critical to these students’ success.

So, even though the program is leaps and bounds beyond what it once was, we can’t call it LEAP anymore but we can call it what it is: Bialik’s Academic Support Program!

Former JPPS Teacher wins Education Award

The Jewish Public Library’s Yaacov Zipper Prize in Education is given to a Montreal Educator who has made an outstanding contribution to Jewishnira.jpg formal or informal education.  This award, made possible by the J.I. Segal Foundation and founded by Dr. Hirsh Rosenfeld and by Mrs. Dvora Rosenfeld, was awarded this year to JPPS former staff and beloved Hebrew teacher Nira Friedman.  We are so very proud of her, and wish her a hearty mazel tov on this wonderful achievement.

Gewurz Award Winner - our very own Avi Satov

Avi.jpgBialik’s very own Avi Satov has won this year’s Brenda & Samuel Gewurz Award for Excellence in Jewish Education.  This award was inaugurated in 2007, and recognizes the contribution educators make to Jewish education and how they inspire young people to connect with their Jewish identity.

Avi has been teaching at Bialik High School since 2002. Last year, he was promoted to Dean of Students, responsible for the day-to-day running of Cycle I (secondary 1 and 2) and Student Life Coordinator for the entire school. He continues to teach Ethics and Jewish Life while coaching multiple sports teams.

With 18 years of summer camp experience, including as Director of Camp B’nai Brith and Pripstein's Camp Mishmar, Avi brings youthful energy, enthusiasm and a love for children to his role. Over the years, he has also been involved with other causes, including Habitat for Humanity, March of the Living, Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation, Agence Ometz, and the Bronfman Jewish Education Centre’s Board of Directors and the Camp Council. Avi is extremely committed to being a mentor and a positive role model.

Mazel Tov, Avi!  We are so very proud of you!

Mr. Trager is Back...

If you had told me a few years ago that Canadian History would be my favourite subject, I would have laughed out loud.  I am so happy that Mr. Trager is back in the classroom after being Principal of Bialik last year.  Mr. Trager is one of the best teachers I have ever had.  He makes learning fun and interesting, and as a student, you want to do well in his class.  He is strict, but the kids respect him and he has a lot of respect for his students.  We are learning a lot and working hard. Thanks, Mr. Trager, for showing Bialik students what it is like to have a teacher you will never forget.

A Secondary III Student

A son's love... a father's legacybotwinik.jpg

Alexander Botwinik ’81 has much to be proud of!  He has collaborated with his father David, seen here in the photo with Elizabeth Kennell, Director of Advancement, and the result is “From Holocaust To Life”, a collection of 56 of his dad’s original musical compositions.  Lorna Smith, Bialik Yiddish teacher and choir leader extraordinaire is thrilled to bits to have this book as a valuable resource for her choir!

For more information, please go to www.botwinikmusic.com.

Erin Nemes '03 - Back to her roots

Erin.jpgWe would like to welcome Erin Sendel Nemes ‘03 to Bialik as she takes on the position of guidance counselor.  Erin graduated from Bialik in 2003, and has since received an undergraduate degree from McGill and two graduate degrees in Psychological Counseling from Columbia University in New York City.  Erin is happy to be back in Montreal and working for the JPPS-Bialik family, a place she has always called home.  When asked how she is enjoying her first few months on the job, she replied “I love it! I am so happy to be here.”  If you would like to contact Erin, her email address is e.nemes@bialikmtl.ca or simply type in Erin Nemes in FirstClass.

We thank Erin and her husband David Nemes '00, for having presented at Bialik’s Open House. We couldn’t be more blessed to have them help promote the school in this way.

Bialik Recap - The first 2 months

Here is a glimpse into the amazing lineup of events that your children have been part of both in and around our school.

Family BBQ and Orientation

At a welcome back JPPS-Bialik BBQ held in the new gym (see article), fun was had by all! Orientation sessions for both parents and students took place throughout the month of September for all grade levels. During our Secondary II orientation, we had the pleasure of having Carol Liverman, coordinator of Group Services program at Ometz speak to us about “What Makes Teens Tick”.

Days of Awe

As part of our holiday observances, the entire school attended a Days of Awe assembly organized by Mrs. Etti Kimchi, our Judaic Studies Co-curricular coordinator, where our own Rabbi Mark Fishman who is the Jewish Life coordinator, addressed the entire student body about the significance of the ten days separating Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Our Bialik choir performed both Yiddish and Hebrew songs. Our thanks go to Mrs. Lorna Smith for preparing the choir so well.

Bonding over Bowling

All Secondary I students had the opportunity to bond and get to know their Secondary V counterparts as they played during a fun-filled morning of “Bonding Over Bowling” at Rose Bowl Lanes.

Laptop Rollout

All Secondary III students received their new tablet laptops on September 21st during our Laptop Rollout Night. This program enables students to reap the benefits of integrated technology throughout their curriculum.

Sukkah

This year, thanks to the generosity of numerous families, our Secondary V students helped build a permanent sukkah as lasting legacy to “their” school (see article). Local Rabbis were invited to celebrate the holiday while our students visited and ate in the sukkah. We thank the numerous Rabbis who gave of their time to come and explain the symbolism of this chag.

JISA Gold

Our Juvenile Girls and Boys teams won gold at the JISA Soccer Tournament on October 3rd. Congratulations to them and to their coaches for their hard work and determination.

Feeder School Visits

In early October we welcomed students from our feeder schools, JPPS and Solomon Schechter Academy. They were able to spend a couple of hours touring and learning at our school, hosted by our own Bialik student guides.

Open House

Our Open House on October 13th was a great success, as numerous visiting parents and future students got to see what makes Bialik such an amazing school. I would like to thank the entire Bialik staff and many volunteers for welcoming our visitors as well as providing them with pertinent information about our school. Many guests expressed their gratitude and felt that our dedicated teachers were very helpful and informative.

Sensitization Program

Lifshitz.jpgThe Secondary I Sensitization Program, coordinated by Mrs. Lainie Smajovits, is underway. At the first session on October 5th, students saw the movie Radio,  about a young man with disabilities. In their second meeting on Oct. 25th they heard from Michael Lifshitz ’92.  Michael gave students insight on how it feels to live with a specific disability, as well as an awareness of his strengths and abilities.

Plays and Films

A group of 33 Secondary IV and V students, accompanied by Bialik teachers and staff, went to Stratford on Oct. 13-15. They saw productions of Evita, Peter Pan, and As You Like It.

Two Secondary 5 French classes went to see the highly-rated Quebecois film Incendies, based on a book which they will be studying this year.

Beit Halochem

On October 15th Secondary III students met with disabled Israeli war veterans who were visiting Canada under the auspices of Beit Halochem, an organization that provides specialized rehabilitation and therapy. On the same day we had our first Free Dress Day, where our own GLEE club members raised money for their charity of choice - The Just for Kids Foundation benefitting the Montreal Children's Hospital. Yasher Koach to all who participated.  Bialik will be one of ten schools performing at the Just for Kids Foundation Glee High School Showdowns on Sunday, November 21st, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Loyola High School.

Debating

Bialik entered two teams in the QSDA Debating Tournament at LCC on October 18th.

Breast Cancer Foundation Breakfast

A group of students accompanied teacher Marcy Stein on Oct. 21st to attend the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation Breakfast. The guest speaker was Caroline Ouellette, gold medalist in Ice Hockey at the 2010 Olympic Games.

Extracurricular Activities

Bialik students are very much involved in numerous extracurricular activities. Student Council elections and auditions for the school plays have taken place. All committees are in place. Congratulations to those students who were chosen for HOPS and LEDA. Senior students are in the midst of planning the Fashion Show, Freak out.  Bialik Theatre is busy rehearsing for the production of Grimm, to be presented on December 1st and 2nd. In sports, the soccer and football teams are already competing against other schools, and practices have begun for basketball and peewee hockey. It is quite impressive to see how seriously our students take their commitment to sports.

Book Blasters

The Junior Book Blasters club for Secondary I and II students is on its way. Students will read about six books throughout the year, and will meet during lunch to discuss them with our librarian, Mrs. Marsha Lustigman. Guest speakers will also be invited to speak with the students during the year.

Jewish Life

As for events relating to Jewish Life at our school, we now an offer optional daily minyan, accompanied by a light breakfast, as well as “Lunch and Learn” with Rabbi Mark Fishman on Tuesdays and Fridays with members of The Torah Mitzion Kollel (see article). As well, the Jewish Life Committee has made a podcast about Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, available on our school’s website.

Shireen Butman, Principal, Bialik

Professional Music and Video Production at Bialik

If all goes as hoped, music at Bialik should be getting more “air time”! Building on our flagship programs, Bialik Theatre and the Yiddish Choir, as well as on students’ participation in and outside of the classroom in video production, podcasts, the annual Fashion Show and most recently, in our very own Glee Club, a “studio” is in the works.   A place to jam, to record, to write music, to produce video, to edit… for aspiring musicians, audio engineers, sound technicians, videographers…, it will enhance Bialik’s Performing Arts Complex, without taking away from the Athletics part!

Located in the room to the right of the stage, or for our veteran stage performers, “stage left”, it will be equipped with a drum set, keyboard, guitars, microphones, a mobile front-of-house console for recording and editing, a video editing station, green screen, and HD video cams, among much more (some of which has already been donated by the Kalisky family). The school has also been the lucky recipient of a baby grand thanks to the Wajcman family. While it won’t fit into the new facility, Music Advisory Committee member and Secondary V student Daniel Witkowski was delighted to be among the first to tickle the keys (second only to Jaimie Wajcman)! We are also grateful to committee member Geoff Lang who most recently brought in Nicky Yanofsky’s sound engineer to consult on this exciting project; he was blown away by our current state-of-the-art stage facilities and stated that it would not be such a leap for us to rival professional recording venues.

At the last meeting of the committee, we welcomed George Doxas as an invited guest. A renowned jazz musician, former choir director and Head of the Montreal International Music Camp run by McGill University,  he is now the Director of Music and Concert Development at the Segal Centre. He shared with us some of his experiences in getting such initiatives successfully off the ground at other schools, encouraging the committee to pursue this dream as a benefit not just to the students, but to the school as a whole.

And, now the students have gotten on board, and not just those on the Music Advisory Committee, but also the student council representatives who are now busy selling tickets to Blue Rodeo coming to Place des Arts on November 30th . The proceeds of this student-led campaign will go directly to funding the music studio initiative, thanks to Jonathan Goodman ’84 agreeing to their sub-initiative. (see article)  Thanks to parent Richard Rubin, a pair of VIP Habs tickets has been offered to the student who sells the most (with a minimum of $600). Parents and graduates of the Class of 1981, Lisa Blatt Alexander '81 and Nina Heft Josephson '81, are also supporting this effort with a personal appeal to parents and friends. Between this and an event on January 17th, 2011, we hope to have amassed sufficient funds to offset the costs of renovation and equipping this new space, as well as to hire a very multi-talented teacher to run with this initiative!

Although hard to assemble in the room all at the same time, the committee continues to grow and now includes: Jaime Roskies ’83, Louise Goldstein and Joseph Abramowitz ’77, co-chairs and  David Buzaglo, Seth Dalfen ’83, Jeff Itcush, Maureen Kalisky, Mark Kalisky,  Geoffrey Lang, Chanti Lepessec, Oliver Mayers ’10, John Mendelson JPPS ’77, Michael Rappaport ’11, Avi Satov, Adina Singer, Jordana Singer’ 15, Lorna Smith, Brian Strasser, David Wajcman, Jesse Stein ’12, Steve Stein, Brian Young and Daniel Witkowski ’11, along with Anisa Cameron and William Kirman as advisors.

Bialik blogs!

Bialik Reads! is the name of my latest library adventure – a blog about what our kids are reading and recommending to each other (and to me!). Follow the Bialik Reads! blog on the Library website or by clicking here.

And despite predictions to the contrary, our students are reading more than ever before, judging by the book loan statistics for the months of September and October.  In the most popular category are The Lightning Thief and The Hunger Games, as well as anything by Sarah Dessen, Jodi Picoult or Anthony Horowitz.  Our Junior and Senior BookBlasters book clubs are also busy reading and discussing a variety of great novels on the themes of war and coming-of-age.  Titles such as Tim O’Brien’s great collection about young marines in Vietnam called The Things They Carried, and the classic Catch-22 by Joseph Heller are on their list this year, as well as John Green’s Looking for Alaska and Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak.

Graphic novels (Bandes dessinées) are always popular and a new library exhibit profiles some of the best from our collection, in french and english.  Come browse through the display where you will find everything from Manga Shakespeare to The Rabbi’s Cat.

Passion for the arts lives on at Bialik

Thanks to the parents, Shirley and Abe Gonshor JPPS ’54, of the late Sarah Gonshor ’93 z”l, an innovative and collaborative art project will be undertaken by Secondary V Bialik students under the direction of art teacher Kelly Shackman. Ten years after the tragic passing of Sarah, this project reflects the passion she had for art and its therapeutic qualities, which was a personal as well as professional pursuit of hers in the field of education. This project will be undertaken annually and involve a variety of mediums. Ultimately, it will result in an artwork worthy of display for at least one year in the school. This year’s project will involve the students in both the design and creation of a work in stained glass as originally proposed by art teacher Chanti Lepessec.

Sarah Gonshor graduated from JPPS-Bialik in 1993, after which she obtained her B.Ed in 2000 from McGill University. Her brothers are also both graduates, Michael ’90 and Joshua ’98. Their father graduated from Jewish Peretz School in 1954, their mother, Shirley is a former JPPS-Bialik President, and is now a trustee. As a family, they believe strongly in the mission of JPPS-Bialik and the importance of a Jewish education, especially the study of Yiddish, which serves to enhance ones’ Jewish identity. We are very grateful to them for ensuring Sarah Gonshor’s legacy lives on in a tangible, creative way at her alma mater.

Communication is key

Check out our website! You will notice a number of improvements, from fresh content to additional areas such as students’ art work in the Arts Education section, and up-to-date news on athletics on sport-specific pages, and current events with accompanying photo galleries.

You will also find newly-designed viewbooks for JPPS and Bialik, published as PDFs on our website, in the Admissions sections. Updates to our JPPS, Bialik and JPPS-Bialik Alumni Facebook pages, accessible through our website, are also made on a regular basis, and include student videos, artwork, and postings varying from sports and event updates to links to JPPS and Bialik people in the news.

JPPS Open House 2010.jpgJPPS Open House 2010_French.jpgSuburban_web.jpg

You should also know, if you didn’t already notice, that JPPS-Bialik ran Welcome Back and Open House ads in French and English in The Suburban, Canadian Jewish News and Montreal Families, in addition to banners and radio ads for CJAD and Virgin Radio. Pre-K to Grade 6 flyers were distributed as well. No wonder our Open Houses were such successes (more than double last year's attendance at JPPS, for instance!). This jam-packed newsletter attests to all that is going on. Much thanks go to Atie Waxman, Advancement Officer and Amy Finkelstein JPPS ’78, Advancement Manager.

Elizabeth Kennell, Director of Advancement

We thank you kindly for these gifts…

Thanks to generous Bialik parents Maura and David Wajcmann, Bialik isBaby Grand.jpg now home to a baby grand piano! Doug Yeats of West End Piano provided the cover for the piano, which is nestled in a corner of our Hall of Honour.  Our students are thrilled, as many have already expressed their musicality by playing it!  Thank you, Maura, David and Doug!

Thanks to JPPS parents Lorne and Nadine Switzer, JPPS now has a new video camcorder, complete with case and tripod.  Never ones to see our school needing anything, they once again showed their true school spirit with this purchase. Thank you, Lorne and Nadine.  We are lucky to have you in our school family!

JPPS-Bialik parent Michael Savelson, also President of the new JPPS Parent Council, certainly has our students’ fitness in mind.  He generously donated two fitness balls for our Fitness Studio at Bialik. As we all know, good physical health is key, and our students will only benefit from this gift. Thank you, Michael.
