Message from the Principal and Educational Director of Bialik

Elaine Wisenthal MilechIt is hard to believe that we are already almost one month into the school year and what an exciting one it is going to be!

Close to 120 students began in Secondary I this year, so excited to be starting their high school careers. After a well organized and fun orientation program for them, including our annual Secondary I and V bowling outing, our youngest group is now comfortably enmeshed in Bialik.

We also welcomed several transfer students at other grade levels and first reports indicate that they are extremely happy at Bialik.

This year brings three new administrators as well, all of whom are enriching the structure already in place. We welcome Rabbi Daniel Rosenberg from New York as Director of Judaic Studies. Rabbi Dan, as he is becoming fondly known, is meeting students and teachers, learning about our programs and has already worked on the organization of two Shabbatons, community service programs, curricular items and student-related issues.

We also welcomed two new Vice-Principals, one for each of the junior and senior schools. Louise Shiller has assumed the role of VP of the senior school and Yvan Trépanier has assumed the role of VP of the junior school. Ms. Shiller was in charge of academic support services at Solomon Schechter Academy and most recently was director of Federation CJA on the West Island. She brings with her much educational expertise and is very busy working with our senior students on the organization of student council and senior committees. M. Trepanier was Vice-Principal of Hebrew Foundation School and was a special educator at Vanguard School. M. Trepanier has been very busy helping the junior students make the transition to high school, working on both academic and social issues.

And, of course, the excitement over Phase II of our renovations is high. We are looking forward to our new gymnasium and state-of-the-art stage facilities. At the moment, we are awaiting the completion of our current gymnasium, which underwent major renovations over the summer. In the meantime, the weather has cooperated and many wonderful gym classes have taken place outside.

Curricular changes have taken place in almost every grade level. The new Ethics and Religious Culture program has been implemented in Secondary I, II and IV through our Jewish History programs. In our Hebrew programs, a new emphasis is being placed on comprehension and conversation. In addition, our Judaic Studies task force has created a pilot program in the Secondary III program, whose goal is to integrate all four areas of the Jewish Studies program. The most significant curricular changes have taken place at the secondary IV level as the reform moves up a grade. The new math, art and the Ethics and Religious Culture programs have added new dimensions (and many challenges!) to their program. However, things seem settled now and the new curriculum brings with it much exciting learning.

As usual, Bialik continues to be a busy place with its myriad of cocurricular and extracurricular activities. Both juniors and seniors are getting ready for student council elections. Our Bialik Outdoor Adventure Club (BOAC) had their first outing for the seniors, a hike in the Adirondacks, while a bicycle-related outing is being prepared for the juniors. Orientation evenings have taken place at four grade levels and our Secondary III students have all received their laptops – tablet PCs- which will allow us to further integrate technology into our Math and Science programs. Secondary IV and V Shabbatons have been planned and at least one will have taken place by press time of this newsletter. Auditions have taken place for the school plays and our senior students are getting ready to begin production of the famous Bialik fashion show. Our extracurricular sports program is in full swing with soccer having started their fall competitive season and football and basketball teams in practices, getting ready for their season.

Excitement is high, learning has begun and activities abound!

On behalf of the entire staff and administration, I would like to wish everyone a healthy and happy New Year.

Elaine Wisenthal Milech, Principal and Educational Director

Message from the Bialik Home and School Association

We are very excited to start the 2008-2009 school year. We began the year with our huge book sale. Thank you to Beth Fineberg ‘79, Cheryl Monk ‘72, Sari Saks and their wonderful volunteers for all of their help. With Rosh Hashana just around the corner, we will be serving the honey cake to all of the students as our way of wishing everyone a sweet new year. We hold many fundraisers throughout the year. By buying Entertainment books or Passover chocolates from the Home and School, the monies raised revert back to the school, for your children.
We have also begun to collect gently used uniforms to sell. Check through your closets and drop them off at the school office.

If you have extra time and would like to be involved in the Home and School, please call Maura @ 514 497-5185.

National Educational Computing Conference (NECC)

Brenda FayermanSan Antonio, Texas
June 29 – July 2, 2008

This year’s NECC attracted 18,000 international attendees. I attended with Daniel Cohen, Directeur des études françaises, and we both represented JPPS-Bialik. As always, this conference was very inspiring and much-needed at the end of a school year, and before embarking on the new year. In her opening address, ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education, the organization that produces NECC) President Dr. Trina Davis urged the audience of educators to “Dream big!” We need to have high expectations and be advocates for change.

The central theme of the conference was collaboration and its tag line was “Convene, Connect, Transform.” The opening keynote speaker was James Surowiecki, author of The Wisdom of Crowds. He presented a fascinating premise that “the crowd” (a random group of people) is smarter than any individual (even an expert). In statistical experiments, for example, where people are asked to guess the number of jelly beans in a jar, the average guess is always closer to the answer than any single answer. He recounted a story of a missing submarine that could not be found by the US Navy engineers and experts. When a group of people with various backgrounds (artists, scientists, teachers, etc.) were asked to come up with a possible scenario for the missing submarine, they were able to find it by searching a location which was given by the average location in all of the scenarios. Mr. Surowiecki extends this premise to say that the problems we are trying to solve now will not be solved by any individual but rather by groups of people. Technology facilitates collaboration. For schools, this means we need to teach students to work in teams and educators need to collaborate to synthesize best practices for 21st century learning. We certainly plan to work together this year to achieve great things. We hope to use our technology tools and online environments to facilitate this.

In the closing keynote, Dr. Idit Harel Caperton presented her vision for Web 2.0 literacy (interactivity with the Web). As a student of the visionary Seymour Papert, she is an advocate for constructivist learning. She gave many examples of reaching students through the programming of educational video games. She is a strong advocate for one-to-one computers from kindergarten up. She said that in order to form the “wise crowd” of the opening keynote address, we need to first grow in each child the “wisdom of one”. This means equal and meaningful learning opportunities for all. These goals align with the JPPS-Bialik vision for meeting the needs of each child, as well as equal access to the best education for all economic and academic levels.

Brenda Fayerman, Director of IT, JPPS-Bialik

A Special Thank-You

JPPS-Bialik would like to take this opportunity to thank Bialik parent Kathy Cohen, President of the Meadows Condominium Association for her members’ patience and understanding. We acknowledge that the Bialik Expansion Project has caused, and will likely continue to cause, many headaches for the Meadows residents. We hope to prevail upon their continued support of this project.

Check Out the New Bialik Landscaping

LandscapingDoesn’t the new landscaping look fantastic? Fresh green grass and new pavement certainly goes a long way to making the outdoor area look spectacular. Too bad it has to snow so soon!

Gadna Through My Eyes

Gadna - army baseIf I had to list the most amazing thing I have ever done, it would definitely be going on Dorot.
My favourite part, and what I will always remember, was Gadna, the army base. Even though wake up every day was earlier then we all expected, it was worth it in the end. We spent 5 days there. During these 5 days we went through everything a typical soldier would have to go through while he/she is in training. We had to wake up around 4:45-5:45 every day, and we each had different chores to do. We were taught how to shoot an M-16, which is the gun used in the Israeli army, and we were then able to shoot the gun!
Another reason I liked Gadna so much was because I got to experience what every Israeli has to go through. We experienced all of the mental and physical challenges an Israeli adolescent must go through, and this really meant a lot to me.
I would really recommend that each and every grade 9 student go on this trip! Not only is it educational in that we learn about our history, but at the same time it is the most fun I have ever had. You become so close with everyone on the trip- both old and new friends. It was the time of my life, and I will never forget it. :o)

My Israel Experience

Israel ExperienceIsrael was an amazing experience for me and my family. To hear people speaking Hebrew and to see people openly proud to be Jewish was an experience like no other; it was like entering another world. Many of the restaurants were Kosher and the Jewish population was large. It was a place where I felt at home. The sights were breathtaking: from Massada, a fortress where a small number of Jews were able to hold off the Roman army for years, to Yad Vashem, the Israeli Holocaust Museum. From Eilat to the Galilee, from Mizpeh Ramon to Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem, the country was fantastic. I found it unbelievable that a country as small as Israel had so many amazing things to see and experience. With all that said, the Kotel was probably the most special place I visited. Almost 2000 years ago, the Romans destroyed the Second Jewish Temple but a part of the Temple, the Kotel, still stands. The Kotel is a reminder to the Jewish people and to the world that even though enemies have tried to destroy us, the Jewish people still stand strong.

Our Visitor from Beit Halocheim

Audrey Kucer ‘10Over the course of the past two weeks, my family and I had an Israeli living at our house. Besides being a very gentle and kind man, Tomer is an Israeli veteran of the Lebanon war. As Tomer experienced his first Shabbat dinner at our house, my Zaydie approached me and asked what Tomer represented to me. Glancing at Tomer, I couldn’t help but to look at the scar on his head and how he received it. He had risked his own life for the existence of a Jewish land, a Jewish people and Jews internationally, such as our Montreal Jewish community. My Zaydie and I concluded that we are honored to be associated with such a respected man.

Secondary II Student Ethan Itzkovitz an Ace at Maccabi Games!

Ethan ItzkovitzBialik’s very own Ethan Itzkovitz , a Secondary II student and tennis player extraordinaire, won the bronze medal in the boys 14-and-under category at the Maccabi Games in West Bloomfield, outside of Detroit, this past August
Ethan exemplifies how hard work and determination can pay off in the end. The entire Bialik community congratulates one of its own on a job well done.
Mazel tov, Ethan!

New Orleans, Here We Come!

In February 2009, twenty Secondary V students will be traveling to New Orleans for a week on an educational volunteer trip. The students involved will be helping to rebuild homes which were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. They will be working with the Habitat for Humanity organization.

Bialik has taught students the importance of Tikkun Olam, and this trip will give students hands-on experience helping others. Our Jewish heritage and the French language are two of the main characteristics of our unique Montreal community and will be integral parts of the New Orleans trip. The students will be touring the Jewish and French Quarters of New Orleans, which will allow them to learn about the city’s history and rich culture and compare it to our own.

Bialik is expanding for us!

The Bialik Expansion Campaign is already at $2.4 million. We need to reach $3 million dollars if we are to avoid a fee increase associated with this project come this time next year.

We are counting on you!

Bialik’s Youngest Donor

Michael LangSecondary II student Michael Lang understands the importance of paying it forward. When this budding philanthropist received a Bar Mitzvah present from his synagogue (to be used for tzedakah), he could have theoretically donated the funds to any cause that he deemed noble. What makes Michael’s story special is the fact that he chose to donate the funds to the JPPS-Bialik Expansion Campaign.

“I’m very active in sports and I’m really enjoying being at Bialik. I took the opportunity to help with the expansion project because I support the plan for a new gym, and I think it’s going to benefit all students in the school.”

Michael plans to be involved in the sports program at Bialik again this year, hoping to participate in basketball and hockey. He is looking forward to trying out the new gym as soon as possible.

Leave Your Mark! Bialik Expansion Mezuzah Campaign

Coming up with fundraising ideas is no easy task. But we here at JPPS-Bialik feel we have come up with an amazing idea—a chance to leave a tangible legacy at Bialik High School.

To celebrate the completion of Phase I of our expansion, and with Phase II well underway, Bialik is offering the naming rights to every mezuzah in the school! This is a first-come, first-served opportunity that can’t be missed.

There is no better way to honour or memorialize a loved one. There is no better way to say “thank you” than by naming a specially designed mezuzah on your child’s classroom door in honour of the teacher that changed your child’s life, or maybe even yours!

At this point you may be eying the main front door entrances including the one for the NEW Athletics and Performing Arts Centre. Bialik will be auctioning the naming rights for these exclusive, highly coveted locations on the world’s most famous and most trusted online auction website, Ebay, at virtually no cost to us—a perk for non-profit organizations!

This is truly an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to support the school you love while permanently etching your name or the names of your loved ones in our history.

Please email amy.f@jppsbialik.ca, or call 514-731-2944x263 for more information.

Homecoming 2008 – Be There!

JPPS-Bialik Homecoming 2008By now, everyone reading this newsletter ought to have been made aware of the JPPS-Bialik Homecoming event THIS SUNDAY, September 28 from 1:00-3:00 PM at Bialik. To those definitely attending, I wish to say thank you in advance. To everyone thinking of “maybe” coming, and to those who may be leaning towards not coming, I say “come on, why would you miss it?”

Never before has so much entertainment been packed into a very short two-hour time period. Where else can you possibly see a TV celeb chef live in person (Howard Dubrovsky ’96), the classic teachers you likely grew up with (think Leslie Silverstein, Esther Regev, my mom Lainie Smajovits, and more!), two rocking, professional bands, and even win $1,800 towards a child’s tuition? The short answer is NOWHERE ELSE!

A special thanks must go out to Nitai Friedman ’77 for his guidance and help in bringing about Homecoming, and to Neil Creme of Hardt Equipment for his support of the event.

I could close with a mushy line about how JPPS-Bialik had a hand in molding you and/or your children into upstanding citizens of the world. But instead I will end this article with what I tell my own friends about why they need to be at Homecoming: you are going to have a good time, guaranteed.

P.S. Have you heard Dan Laxer ’84 on CJAD? He just can’t stop talking about Homecoming ’08!

JPPS-Bialik All-Star Alumni- What on Earth Are they Doing?

Judy Batalion ’94 is starring in her very own comedic and storytelling show called “The Only Jew in the Village, is there life After Cote St. Luc? And, if so, is it worth living?”

Sunday, September 21, 2008 at 7:30 p.m.

Armed with Bialik-bred sensibilities, tastes, expectations, and attack plans, Judy relays how she braved years of the British aristocratic art world, the culturally-pernickety comedy industry, and the sauna at her local gym, set in the heart of one of Britain’s largest Muslim neighbourhoods. In The Only Jew in the Village Judy tackles themes that include: coming of age in an age that can be rather unbecoming, anti-Semitism, risk-taking, the ‘survival gene’ passed on between generations of Jewish women, and home and the achingly ambivalent experience of it.

Judy Batalion is a freelance writer, comedian and art historian based in London. She is currently editing a book about comedy audiences to be published in 2009.

Our Alumni Make Us Proud!

Alumna of the Month Erin Rothstein ’03

Erin RothsteinTo be considered for the prestigious title of JPPS-Bialik Alumni of the Month, one must have demonstrated exceptional personal qualities or achievements once exiting the friendly confines of our school. After a short five years post-graduation, Erin Rothstein ’03 definitely meets these standards.

At the tender age of 22, this former recipient of the Lori Stein Award for creativity in art at Bialik is a professional artist, with her work already having already been displayed at art galleries here in Montreal such as the Galerie Crescent Contemporain, and as far away as the Museo All'aperto D'arte Contemporanea in Italy. She had her first exhibition at the age of 17.

“My inspiration comes from my late grandfather who I never met, Dave Clavier, although I actually feel like I know him well. His paintings are all over the house.” Erin’s uncle is also Ron Clavier, the noted artist based in Toronto.

Erin describes her style as a “traditional mix between modern and photo-realism” with a touch of “classic baroque.” By the looks of her paintings, the technical classifications do not capture what they actually look like, which just happens to be, in a word, spectacular.

Following her Bialik career, Erin attended Dawson College and graduated with a Fine Arts DEC. At Dawson, Erin was the recipient of the Dawson College Fine Arts Program First Year Achievement Award. Her next step was to attend Concordia University, where she was a student in their Studio Arts/Art History Program and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. At Concordia, she continued her legacy of achievements by being awarded membership in the Golden Key International Honours Society for academic excellence. You can currently find Erin attending the University of Western Ontario, where she is enrolled in the Art History Program, which combines the study of Art History and Studio Arts. She will be graduating in 2010 with a Masters of Arts.

Ms. Rothstein has some very fond words to say about her time at Bialik. In fact she credits the English program, above all, with giving her the tools and building blocks to rise in her chosen career. As she puts it, “you cannot be in Art History and not know how to write.” Specifically, Erin would love to mention Linda Cohen as one of the English teachers that helped mold her high writing quality.
“I also made friends at Bialik that will be with me forever.”

Visit her online at www.erinrothstein.com

Don’t miss Erin Rothstein at JPPS-Bialik Homecoming on September 28! She will be there showcasing her talent!

Students Key to Going Green!

Bialik is enthusiastically moving into another phase in its goal to become “greener”. The Eco Club, consisting of 35 students from the Junior and Senior grades, has been formed. Led by a small group of Secondary V students, the Club is planning many kick-off activities to launch this new phase. They will also be working on ongoing projects throughout the year.

We are very proud of our students’ commitment and motivation, and look forward to the important environmental changes that their work will bring to the Bialik community.

Stay tuned for more details.

Yves Rouillard

P.S. Yves’ duties this year include the coordination of the “greening” of our entire school system, incorporating initiatives some of which are already underway at the Children’s Centre and JPPS.

JPPS-Bialik in the News

JPPS-Bialik loves seeing our name in the limelight!

Here is a little taste:

  • On June 27th, Birdie Goodman was interviewed on CBC radio on the topic of summer school
  • Elaine Cohen from the Canadian Jewish News wrote a fine piece on B.E.A.P. for the August 20th edition
  • JPPS-Bialik’s own Dan Laxer ‘84 from CJAD’s Laxer Live did a segment on “Should I go to my High School Homecoming?” on September 10th. He, of course, IS coming.
  • Brandon Schwartz, a Secondary I student, appeared in the Gazette’s Youth Zone page on September 16th!

Applauded By An Alum!

A Very Diplomatic Visit

Friday, September 12th was an incredibly exciting day for students of Jeff Itcush’s elective political science class, for these privileged students were treated to an incredibly rare event— a private lecture on the geopolitical status of Israel given by none other than former Israeli ambassador to France and to the United Nations, Yehuda Lancry. In addition to Mr. Itcush’s class, ten politically inclined students from Ecole Maimonide were also on hand to hear the words of the professional diplomat.

Having served as the Israeli Ambassador to France from 1992 to 1995, Ambassador Lancry became the 12th permanent representative of Israel to the United Nations in 1999, where he represented the State until 2002. Taking this into consideration, Ambassador’s Lancry’s talk covered a wide array of issues sensitive to Israel including the peace process with the Palestinians, Israel’s relationship with the United Nations, and naturally, the continually unfolding nuclear standoff with Iran. From the moment Ambassador Lancry was introduced by Edmond Elbaz, the eyes of entire room were completely fixated on the man who stood before them.

“We are still dealing with an issue of a lack of mutual recognition,” the ambassador stated with regards to the Palestinian peace process. Dr. Lancry continued to explain that when much of Palestinian decision making is in the hands of people who fail to recognize the existence of Israel (Hamas), arriving at a fair and secure peace agreement is quite the arduous task.

In response to a challenging question regarding the United Nations and its effectiveness in promoting peace throughout the world, Ambassador Lancry explained that even with all its inherent faults, the Security Council is “still the only international body we have to ensure peace and stability throughout the world.” He also reminded the students that Israel has seen some successes in the United Nations, most recently with the election of former Ambassador Dan Gillerman to the position of Vice-President of the 60th UN General Assembly. The last Israeli to hold this position was UN envoy Abba Eban in 1952.

After the talk, the Ambassador graciously agreed to remain in the classroom to sit down and talk with some students on a one-to-one basis. Bialik Secondary V student Sabrina Dabby took full advantage of the opportunity. She explained to Dr. Lancry that like him, she also has a career ambition to become a diplomat. As if Ambassador Lancry was a guidance counselor, he patiently discussed the many paths one could travel in order to become an Ambassador. Said Dabby, “I need to understand what I’m getting myself into.”

Ambassador Lancry offered the following praise for Bialik following the question and answer session: “I have such pride in speaking to these students because they are very well informed.”
